Lent

The liturgical calendar has developed over the course of the Church’s history and organizes the year into seasons that rehearse the Gospel story and invite us to live within it. Lent is the season leading up to Holy Week and Eastertide in the Christian calendar. The early church set aside these 40 days (not including Sundays) as a time of prayer and fasting, penitence and alms-giving, to prepare their hearts and lives for the events of the Triduum: Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday. During Lent, we are reminded that the journey of this life is towards the cross, for it is only through sharing in the death of Christ that we also share in his life and have hope in his eternal kingdom.
